HeatinG - INFO & lower BILLS
We often get questions about winter WE Energies bills.
TL;DR: Heat is very expensive in our cold Wisconsin winters, and will increase your bill significantly for a few months.
Milwaukee has the highest average monthly energy bills of any major US city! (source here)
Even at the lowest thermostat setting, a lot of energy is needed to maintain a safe level of heat to prevent frozen pipes. If it’s colder than 40-50°F outside, the heaters are almost certainly running.
The amount of electricity used is directly proportional to the heat generated by the baseboard heaters.
…unless you notice one that will not become warm/hot to the touch even with the thermostat turned up.
In this very rare case, please contact maintenance (414-750-2957).
If you believe WE Energies’ meters are malfunctioning (again, very rare), please contact them (800-242-9137).
Electric bills fluctuate greatly between seasons.
Budget Billing through WE Energies can spread out seasonal variations in your energy bill over 12 months.
Keep in mind: you’re always paying for the previous billing cycle, not the current one.
WE Energies bill estimates are the average (mean) of monthly bills over a 12-month period.
You can call them (800-242-9137) to see where your average bill sits compared to other comparable units, or your unit from prior years.
Bills vary by:
Unit size / layout / position
Current energy costs
Usage, especially heat:
Heating can account for 50-70% of your energy bill in winter.
Keep furniture, curtains, and other objects a few feet away from baseboard heaters to improve heat circulation.
Set each room’s thermostat lower when you're away for weekends, breaks, or out for the day (minimum ~50°F).
Ensure windows and doors are closed and locked to prevent drafts and heat loss.
Check around windows, doors and ACs for drafts.
Contact us — we can provide free plastic window/AC insulation kits for added winter protection.
We aren’t obligated to do this, but we want your heating to be as efficient as possible, so we’ll provide this for noticeable drafts at no cost to you.
While you don’t pay for water, the electricity for your water heater is a factor in your energy bill.
Consider shorter hot showers.
Use the dishwasher, which is more efficient than hand-washing.

Review and compare your energy use
Access your account online and see how your energy use compares to the previous month and year. This information can help you track and understand how much energy you’re using.
Generally, if you “View Bill History,” the monthly cost will resemble a bell curve with the peak around January/February. This is normal usage and indicates that malfunctioning heaters or appliances are unlikely.
